According to Michael Poryes, New Line's president of production at the time, Sega approached multiple other studios before choosing them. The script was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon while Neal H. Moritz (Fast and Furious) was in charge of film production. Production costs were an estimated $90 million. In October 1999, Sega announced that the project had been canceled. According to a press release from Sega of America, “Sega has decided not to proceed with theatrical release for the "Sonic the Hedgehog" film slated for a late summer start this year. [...] The "Sonic" feature film has been a priority at Sega of America since its inception in 1996. With New Line Cinema onboard as a production partner, we were able to develop our concept far enough along to present it to key movie industry executives at this year's Cannes Film Festival and American Film Market events. Unfortunately, the parties could not agree on terms for a satisfactory film product." The movie was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada under the working title of "Sonic". The film was also known as "LA Plays Sega" during development. A video game tie-in for the movie known as "Sonic Adventure" was released on September 19, 1999 by Sega. As of January 4, 2010 over 400 million copies worldwide have been sold. Although it was originally titled "Adventure", Sega later requested that New Line change it to "Adventure 2". Thus the new name became part of the popular culture's view on Sonic games. Other video games based on the film were released, including a pinball game by Sega Pinball and a racing game by Gameloft. A novelization of the film was also published a few months before the film's release. Neal H. Moritz was quoted several times in magazines during development, saying that he would make "the most expensive independent movie ever made". This is believed to have been due to the involvement of several high-profile actors, such as Michael Jackson and Jim Carrey, who were expected to be paid large salaries.
